Netball Wrap-up: Round 12 - Modewarre

June 21, 2021

It’s that time of the season where we match up against all the teams again to show who really deserves the top spot.

The 13 2’s secured a close win 19-13 against the Modewarre Warriors. Elizabeth, Scarlotte, and Emerald collected the votes with excellent individual games; however, the most outstanding effort was the leadership and teamwork showed on the court by all the girls.

Strong preliminary moves and goal ring rotation down both ends saw our 15 2’s improve immensely despite the suffering final score of 41-3.

The Under 17’s portrayed their guts and determined against a very physical Modewarre. The speed, agility, and talent of this side was highlighted by Charmaine Turner, Chloe Hudson, and Eleanor Lewis, who all had standout games during a tough day.

The 19’s gave their best efforts on the court. Coach Naomi Caulfield states that Henrietta Wilson played her finest netball to date, collecting 3 votes. The girls went down 26-13.

E Grade was narrowly defeated by Moddawarre, losing by only 7 points at the final whistle, 27-20. Kim Prince and Kate Schram were brilliant in their respective positions, showcasing the value of experience, agility, and talent. Young gun Gabby Shaw had a day out, collecting points again in E grade. She was a burst of energy and spark on the court, her debut season in seniors proving to be very exciting. E grade are ready for a hard battle against Barwon Heads next week.

D Grade had a hard-fought game against Modda, eventually going down 31-14. Sophie Baker, Jess Cole and Zoe Hunt all collected votes continuing their exceptional season of good form. The scoreboard did not reflect the game; in what was a very intense and physical outing from both sides.

C Grade had a heartbreaking finish against Moddawarre; the girls believing that they had won by 2, only to be devastated by the news after the game that the scoreboard was, in fact, incorrect, and that Moddawarre had won by a single goal, 25-24. The loss does not discount the effort of Myee Lowerson-Peric, who had a standout game running out at center and collecting the three votes. This was matched by Jeamma Evans consistently good form in defense, as well as Giselle Hudson’s valent effort in the goal ring. This game solidified the competitive and skilled capabilities of C Grade and will make them hungry for a win in the coming weeks.

In the scalp of the season, B Grade have created a foundation on and off the court and proved themselves in a nail-biter win against Modda. With knowledgeable support from coaches Liz and Maddy, the girls kept their cool and held their own. With defensive pressure from Ashlyn Connell and Matilda Thompson keeping their players out of the game, mid-court stars Naomi Caulfield and Mimi Jago were able to skillfully intercept and direct play down the court.

A goal-for-goal four-quarter effort by both sides was intensified by the growing crowds, however, the determination and guts from our B Grade girls kept their noses in front. Dynamic shooting superstar, Bella Northeast, would not let the girls give up. Her shooting percentage and mustering teamwork with Pearle Griffiths and Charlotte Furphy allowed the opposition to get frustrated and Modda-worried.

A fantastic show of netball fitness and agility allowed our B Grade champions to finish off with a 43-36 victory.

A Grade suffered a tough loss at the hands of some well-drilled opponents, 67-30. The much anticipated and welcome return of Paige and Hannah added spark and experience to the A grade lineup, both playing excellent games and showing that their time off had not dulled any of their talent and fitness.

Ebony played an excellent game to claim the 3 votes, playing in both WA and WD respectively. As a WA, she was pivotal in creating space and opportunity for the goalers, as well as defending hard to shut down Modda’s WA and, as always, putting her body on the line for her team. Kelsey Bews showed her resilience by showcasing an excellent 4 quarters in a tough defender’s circle, never once dropping her head, or giving up.
