Seas’ women give it their all against reigning premiers

April 11, 2021

Anglesea’s bid for a first-round win in its debut in the AFL Barwon competition fell short as 2019 division one premiers Barwon Heads claimed a 10.11 (71) to 0.0 (0) victory.

The Seagulls started fast in the wet conditions and put through three goals to lead by 19 points.

The attacking threat that the visitors possessed was rewarded once again after the quarter-time break with a further 4.3 to grow the advantage to 46 points at the long break.

AFNC Senior Womens side welcomed out to the field, lead by Captain Cecilia Sammut.

The Seas may have been unable to break through for a historic first goal in their history, but they worked their way into the game in the second half as they restricted the Seagulls to two goals in the third term and one in the last as they had more success defensively.

Cecilia Sammut was the best for the Seas in the defeat, with Lauren Howley, Molly Powell, Olivia Ritchie, and Phoebe Lingam also impressing.

The Anglesea women will return to the field on April 25 against Geelong West 2 at West Oval for the second round of grading.
